The course will be broken off into three parts: the biology behind reproduction, an intersectional approach to reproductive justice, and practical integration of the course materials. The class will first explore the question, “What is reproduction?” Further into the course, students will discuss how the above inquiry relates to justice. Other topics include: Abortion in the Media, Disparities in Reproductive Health, Ethics of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Contraception & Family Planning, and Sexual Violence: A Reproductive Justice Issue. We will also have guest speakers from various professional fields, including faculty from UCSF School of Medicine.

Expect this to be an eye-opening, controversial, and thought-provoking class. The course is heavily discussion-based and participation from every student is highly encouraged! Students will prepare a final presentation related to the topics of the course, allowing the integration of the course materials to the community.

Other assignments throughout the semester include a current event write-up and a 1-2 page response to that week's readings. There will be one quiz at the beginning of the semester regarding reproductive anatomy/physiology & assistive reproductive technologies.

In order to pass the course, a minimum of 70 points is required. Points will be awarded based on the quality of the work. No late assignments or make-up quizzes will be accepted. There will be opportunities for students to make up points by attending a relevant event and writing a short response. A maximum of 2 absences are allowed, with prior notification to the facilitators. Weekly readings will be posted on the bCourses page. It is the student’s responsibility to regularly check the site and complete readings accordingly.

All students that attend the first day of class on Wednesday, January 30th will receive priority enrollment. Additionally, those who fill out the interest form will receive priority. However, if there is more interest in the class than we have the capacity for, we may send out an application so that we can gauge whether the student is interested in the course for the topics & material we will cover, or if they are just taking the class to get units. If most of the students in the class have a deep interest in the concepts we go over, this will allow us to facilitate more productive discussions every week. If you do not attend the first class of the semester, you will not be enrolled in the course.
