Welcome to Case Studies at Berkeley! This class focuses on teaching clinical case studies based on problems of specific human systems. Students are expected to work in groups to solve problems based on actual patient diseases. Throughout the semester, students will improve at differential diagnosis, the ability to discern between diseases with similar symptoms. Similar problem based learning has been implemented by UCSF, UCLA, and UCSD in flipped-classrooms, where the burden of learning lecture material has rested on the students’ shoulders to much success. We aim not only to improve diagnosis, but also to integrate understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of the human body.
Grades are based on a point based system. You need at least 70 total points to receive a P. Points are assigned thusly:
Attendance: 1 point per week (12 weeks counted)
Worksheets: 3 points per week (9 Case Study weeks)
Participation: 1 point per week (11 Case Study weeks)
Project: 40 points (Case Study Proposal (5 points), Case Study Draft (10), Case Study (15), Presentation(10))
Reflection Paper: 10 points (1 page feedback and questionnaire by Monday of RRR Week)
Total: 100 points
You will be expected to turn in assignments for that week regardless of your attendance that week. Any assignments turned in late (up to 1 week after the initial due date) will receive half credit except for worksheets which will lock after class begins that week.
*Must have a minimum of 10 attendance points to pass.
**Completion of Project and Reflection Paper is required to pass.
You must attend the first day of the course and attend all class sessions. As this is a workshop-based course, class attendance is a crucial part of your experience. Up to two absences may be cleared by the facilitators. Any more will result in a NP.
Each tardy counts as half of a single absence and counts towards the two total absences allowed. Tardy policy only extends to the first twenty minutes after Berkeley Time.
No day(s) left until application deadline!
