Students in FemSex will be expected to learn about a wide range of topics, including: anatomy and physiology, the influence of social hierarchies in all aspects of life, female sexual health, body image, contraception and STIs, reproductive choices, solo sex, partner sex, orgasm, sex work, communication, consent, relationships, gender/sex based violence, and empowerment. This course aims at creating an atmosphere that facilitates students ability to learn about their bodies, explore their boundaries, desires, experiences and expand their understanding of power and privilege.
Each section has a prepared agenda with videos, information, activities and discussion questions. As facilitators we provide discussion material and information to work from, and hold the space of the class, but the true learning in the class is based on students sharing with each other. Students are expected to actively participate in the discussions each class, listen carefully to each other, and push themselves to think critically about the topics discussed. Students will also be expected to complete a short assignment for every class period, usually short written reflections. Midterms and final presentations serve as a platform for students to critically engage with and display what they have learned for their classmates.
Student performance is evaluated based on class participation and weekly assignments. In order to pass the class the student is required to attend 4 crucial sections during which midterm and final presentations will be held. Because the class is primarily discussion-based, much of the grade is based on consistent attendance and participation: students are allowed up to two excused absences without consequences, but the third absence will result in failing the course. If a student is present in class but is disruptive, inattentive, or inconsiderate of other students and their perspectives, we will first reach out to them to have a conversation about it, but if they are unresponsive they risk failing the class.
