Welcome to CalStar!
CalStar Yoga is a wonderful opportunity in your college career to both learn and help others perform yoga and thai massage. This class is centered around assisting disabled individuals, who often don't see any physical activity in their lives, with yoga postures and other forms of exercise.
As yoga assistants, the DeCal students will help community members with disabilities get up and exercise for what might be the only time of the week when they aren’t either in bed or a wheelchair. Stretching, loosening, and relaxing the body for a few hours eases pain, increases flexibility and coordination, and helps stimulate all the under-stimulated tissues of the body. The potential long-term benefits for people with disabilities are great. Increased energy, stamina, flexibility, appetite, and more are possible.
We have a large staff of volunteers from very experienced yoga/massage instructors to long-time helpers. Throughout the course you will be learning various yoga techniques and postures, as well as their benefits to the body (e.g. how do you relieve pressure and/or pain in your back due to a weakened posterior chain?).
There are no exams in this course. We have one (very) short reflection paper due during the last day of class, which is usually 1 page at the most. All we ask of you is to show up to class every day.
That said, attendance is mandatory. You are allowed 2 absences total, and in order to pass the class, you must miss no more than 2. There are also 3 additional workshop sessions where we will learn other yoga techniques, as well as special equipment use. These workshop sessions count toward your attendance.
The three additional workshops dates are September 8th, September 22nd and October 20th. These workshops are absolutely mandatory!!
Class meets every Friday in the RSF Combatives Room from 1-4pm. First class meets on Friday, August 31st.
