Welcome to Case Studies on Natural Disasters Decal. This course explores the reciprocal relationship between society and environment through the scope of recent environmental disasters and current environmental perils. Simultaneously we will address social and environmental factors which lead to disaster and make way for further environmental degradation. Over the course of the semester, we will investigate these themes through varied examples in earthquakes, infrastructure, oceans, drought, and wildfire. Ideas central to the course will be cemented in the classroom through lectures, guest speakers, and frequent discussion in response to prompts. In addition, reading and writing assignments to be completed at home will prepare students for more complex themes in class. Attendance and participation are important, so come to class prepared and ready to contribute to the conversation. Our first week is an info session, so feel free to submit an application through the second week. We hope you join us for a wonderful semester!
