This course is composed of two parts: an overview in Armenian music theory and participation in an Armenian choir. Students can enroll in either component for one unit or in both components for two units.
Theory
This portion of the course will present students with lectures and readings on the theory of Armenian discussing its roots, folk elements, twentieth-century composers and music arrangers. Students will gain familiarity with Armenian musical genres, the composition and collection processes music has undergone, and the instruments used in Armenian music. Some lectures will give a comparative overview of the music in regions surrounding Armenia.
Practice
This portion of the course will be composed of a choir. Here, we will learn basic elements of singing and put into practice songs about which we learn in the theoretical section of the course. No musical experience needed.
