Students in this DeCal will explore women who have made themselves heard on political issues throughout the world. We will trace exemplary female political figures from the 18th century to the present, and examine the relevance of these figures in contemporary politics. The course will consider a range of ways in which women do or do not figure into politics, provide students with an overview of topics concerning women in politics, and allow students to develop their own critical thoughts on contemporary political subject matter. We will investigate how narratives surrounding “women’s issues” have shaped consciousness in the public sphere, and how those narratives are still evolving. While we will be focusing primarily on domestic issues, we will also look at women around the globe and attempt to understand how political processes and the place of gender varies across different cultures. Class discussions will be the most vital and rewarding part of the learning experience in this political science Decal.
