This course will provide a beginner's knowledge of how to play the bagpipes. You do not have to read music, speak Gaelic, or even be Scottish to take this course--everybody is welcome! It will be held Tuesday/Thursday from 8-9pm in 128 Morrison, starting Thursday, January 18.
YOU ALSO DO NOT NEED TO BUY A FULL SET OF BAGPIPES! You will, however, need to purchase a practice version of the instrument (called a "practice chanter") for between $70-200. I will advise you on what to buy because there are some really junky chanters out there. You won't need your chanter until January 30, so don't stress if you haven't bought it yet!
The first half of the semester will teach the basics--the notes, technique, history, etc. There will be a midterm (half written, half played) to ensure that you are familiar with the fundamentals, as the remainder of the semester will focus on learning to play tunes. At the end of the semester, you will perform a few of the tunes we learned as a final project in front of the class. There is otherwise no homework aside from individual practice when needed.
Attendance is required, though I understand the timing is difficult and things come up. There will be a sign-in sheet each class to keep track, but just aim to make most classes and you'll be fine.
The main goal is simply to have fun making music and learning something new. If you have any questions, feel free to email me!
