Policy Review at Berkeley is a student-led, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal that is designed for students of all academic disciplines to reflect on and write about the policy implication of their fields of interest. The mission of the journal is to make policy easily accessible, understandable, and applicable for undergraduates from varying academic disciplines and personal backgrounds. The Policy Review at Berkeley DeCal course is designed to help students build interviewing, academic writing, policy-making and policy analysis skills through extensive writing, fieldwork and simulations. Each semester, the journal will publish a new edition of a new theme. This semester’s theme is “The year 2050”. Students will be evaluating the feasibility and potential social, political, and economic impacts of environmental, immigration, healthcare, and technology policy goals set for the year 2050. Students will predict whether we will reach our 2050 goals, and draft alternative policy solutions if they find current goals unachievable, too stringent, or too lax. Each semester, students will focus on up to three policy topics of their choice and have three major writing assignments that vary in length that fall under these topics (i.e. environment, immigration, etc.). They will have one microcosm review piece, one policy review piece, and one individual policy memo project that relates to a theme of their choice (i.e. gender equality, eduction, etc). Each writing piece will be peer edited by one student in the class, and two members of the editorial board. Pieces will also be reviewed by a board of faculty editors. The journal will be a conglomeration of peer-reviewed student writing pieces that will be put together at the end of the semester and published online. Each student will have at least one of their pieces published in the journal. The journal will be reviewed by our faculty editors.
The DeCal will be held from 5-6:30pm every Thursday. Applications are due on [updated] Friday, January 26th by 11:59pm. Decisions will come out on January 29th. After decisions are made, the class number will be emailed to accepted students. Thank you for your interest in Policy Review @ Berkeley! We look forward to reading your applications!
