The purpose of this course is for former Human Anatomy students to research, discuss, design, and implement lesson plans to present to elementary school children. This decal will have two part goals -- the first goal is to introduce teaching methods to pre-health professional and the second is to educate our community's children to the wonders of their bodies, to spark an interest in science, and to stress the importance of caring for themselves, thereby promoting better health.
Participants in this Decal will learn how to create lesson plans, prepare appropriate and fun demonstrations, and teach young children in a classroom setting.
Teams of 3-5 students will:
- choose human anatomy topics
- design/perfect a lesson plan
- perform the lessons for fellow students for feedback and accuracy
- perform the lesson in an elementary school (4 times over semester)
- keep a journal of experiences during the entire process
- write a final reflection on teaching experiences/advice for future participants
Class Requirements: Weekly meetings on Tuesday 6:30 - 8:00 pm will consist of discussions, meetings/presentations by educational professional, and lesson plan practice with peer review. Work outside of class will include lesson plan preparation and practice, traveling to schools, and teaching in classrooms. There are no exams or quizzes.
