Bone Basics: A survey on osteoporosis and bone health

Every year, more than 3 million cases of osteoporosis surface in the United States alone. While it is true that the largest group afflicted by weak bones and high fracture risks is the elderly, bone health depends heavily on the quality of the “bone-building years” between ages 15 and 25. As such, it is crucial that awareness be brought to this disease amongst younger age groups, such as college students.

This DeCal works alongside Bone Health Initiative (BHI), which is based on the awareness-raising endeavors of the American Bone Health (ABH) organization whose mission is “to mobilize communities with timely bone health information that supports strong and healthy bones and prevents osteoporosis and fractures.” That being said, this DeCal will educate you on how to maintain healthy bones and prevent osteoporosis while also train you on how to educate others on this topic. At the end of the 1st module, you will have the choice to enroll as an official peer educator at ABH in training or to remain as a learning student.

This course is 1 unit (pass/no pass) and is split into two lecture-based modules: Volunteer Training and The Bigger Picture. Interactive workshops and simulations will also be offered in the course. Whether or not you choose to become a peer educator, the course will offer an enriched curriculum on bones, from general health and education to the scientific mechanisms underlying osteoporosis. At the end of the semester, you will be either a peer educator or a student, well-rounded and well-versed in bone health education, maintenance, science, and presentation. You will also be able to critically think about bone health—in both macro and micro views—and offer others guidance on preventing osteoporotic disease.

To complete the class, you must pass 2 out of 3 quizzes, write 2 out of 3 reflection essays, pass the exam, and give a final presentation. A total of two absences are allowed.
