In this course, we will dive into the concept of racial formation in relation to the environment by discussing various racial projects, ranging from situations occurring on a national level to events taking place on our own campus. The class is divided into three units which include: structural racism, environmental racism, and stereotypes in the world. In addition to peer discussion inspired by these topics, we will bring in guest speakers to share personal experiences that offer perspective and enhance students’ understanding of racial formation and how it plays into aspects of our daily lives through interaction with natural resources. Course content will include films relating to our pre-readings and learning goals to encourage discussion and keep students engaged. At the end of every unit, students will submit a writing assignment reflection pertaining to the topics discussed during the unit, resulting in three total assignments. We hope that by the end of this course, student are able to feel comfortable identifying components of ideological and structural racism in their personal lives and are able to connect this understanding to broader environmental issues.
