In this course, students will discover the intersectionality between permaculture, people, and the Earth. The course is divided into three units, the first one emphasizing small scale applications of permaculture and the community it fosters in the process and the second taking students back to the soil with regenerative farming practices. In the third unit the course will focus on permaculture's role in combatting capitalist consumerism, giving students the necessary skills to develop a sustainable consumer consciousness.
This course will be graded on a P/NP basis and class will meet regularly once a week in SOGA garden, located on the corner of Virginia and Walnut. Attendance will be mandatory with the exception of two unexcused absences. Weekly readings will also be assigned and students will be expected to do a one-page reflection for three readings (one per unit) of their choice throughout the semester.
