In this course, we will explore radically interdisciplinary connections between poetry, environment, and ecological science. We will think broadly about poetry as a form of communication, an expression of values and worldviews, and an active voice in a grand discourse with other ways of knowing. In particular, we will explore connections between poetry and nature, poetry and ecological science, and poetry and setting.
At the end of this course, students will have a broad exposure to the diverse, exciting, and boundary-pushing ways poetry relates to the natural world. Students will have a greater understanding of what poetry has to say in the face of global environmental crises, how poetry and nature are connected, how the act of writing poetry is related to the environment in which it occurs, and how poetry has been part of environmental activism. Students will also practice analyzing poems and writing poems in different natural settings
