Description:
This course is the equivalent of Applied Anatomy (IB 131A), previously offered through the Integrative Biology department. Marian Diamond, former UC Berkley professor of anatomy, first created this course to acquaint students with anatomy applications in various health fields, through seminars given by successful alumni. This course will continue that tradition and will feature Berkeley graduates, who are now successful medical health professionals, in a series of 1-hour weekly seminars. Guest speakers will provide insight into their daily professional lives, their academic and personal paths that led them to their careers, and their perspectives on the medical field. This course is designed to give students a glimpse of the broad applications of anatomy, outside of the classroom.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to achieve the following:
- Understand real-world applications of material taught in academic courses
- Obtain insight on the professional and personal lives of medical professionals
- Gain exposure to various medical fields
- Learn of the requirements for entry into different medical careers
- Build network with successful Berkeley graduates
Readings:
There will be weekly readings, posted on bCourses Friday afternoon after class. These readings regard general information on the upcoming lecturer’s field and specialty. Students are required to read the articles before class and come prepared to engage with the speakers.
Additional research will include exploration by students of the shared “web surfing” links from your fellow students (see below assignments). We will learn a lot from each other!
Assignments:
There will be 12 assignments over the course of the semester--one each week. Assignments will be write-ups, focusing on lectures from previous weeks, and consist of two sentences written about something that each lecturer said that captured your interest. In other words, write a total of two sentences per guest lecturer about something they said that was meaningful to you. These will be submitted through bCourses. Additionally, each week, students will earn more points for “surfing the web,” sharing applicable information, articles, sites, clubs, organizations, etc. Students will share their research by submitting a link via bCourses. These links will be collected and organized into a spreadsheet by the facilitators and will be posted the following week for students to access. This spreadsheet is for students to see all the research found by the class as a whole.
Assignments must be submitted electronically on bCourses by 11:59 pm on assignment due dates (see calendar). Late assignments will not be accepted and plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Grading & Attendance:
The class is graded on a P/NP basis and students will receive 1 unit upon completion.
Students are expected to attend all of the presentations--no more than 2 unexcused absences are allowed to receive a P grade. Students must complete AT LEAST 10/12 assignments to pass the course.
Grading breakdown of assignments:
12 weeks x 10 pts for the sentences = 120 pts.
12 weeks x 2 pts for the web surfing= 24 pts.
TOTAL class points for 12 weeks: 144
