From his start as K. Dot to his current fame, Kendrick Lamar hit the ground running,
featuring in hits with artists such as Kanye West, The Game, and Drake. This course will
analyze the form and contents of Lamar’s music, specifically looking at it from a political
lens. Through examining Lamar’s rhetoric from the beginning of his career to the present,
we will gain a deeper appreciation for the rapper, artist, and poet he is. In the eight sections
of this course, we will focus on these politically inspired themes: religion, women,
institutionalized racism, gang violence, police brutality, and social mobility.
