With its 39 million residents, the state of California has been known for its vibrant social and cultural diversity, diversified economy, and propensity in being a political trailblazer for the rest of the nation. However, California is no longer the undisputed “Golden State.” California suffers from several issues such as increasing political gridlock, widening social disparities, and an institution of direct democracy that has undermined effective governance. The course will primarily cover institutions of California state government, the Rise of Direct Democracy, and contemporary politics and challenges in California. Typical class activities include guest speakers, interactive lectures, class and small group discussions, and games to help students understand California’s unique political landscape and provide them with opportunities to become more engaged in it.
