Currently the United States constitutes of more than 40 million Spanish speakers. With over 40% of the population growth being among Hispanics, the future is set for an increase in Spanish usage in the United States, especially in the medical field and health sciences. This course will teach students the basics of Spanish as it applies to the medical field such as physical examinations, emergencies, common diseases within the Latino population, and specializations. By familiarizing students with conversational Spanish and medical Spanish, this course will enable students to apply their learning to real-world situations, to assist in communications, and ultimately to break down the barrier between doctors and patients.
Course Objectives:
Students will learn:
1. Basic conversational skills in Spanish within the context of medical situations.
2. Specific vocabulary for emergencies and conversations between doctors and patients.
3. Common diseases and health-related conditions within the Latino community.
