3D printing is a rapidly growing field, with applications to many different disciplines. This DeCal explores the application of 3D printing in the area of medicine, focusing on bioprinting. Bioprinting is the process of creating 3D cellular constructs using 3D printing technology. Through the course, you will be able to understand the theory and practice of 3D printing in tissue engineering through the use of hydrogels and mammalian cell lines. You will then utilize what you have learned to further develop the existing class bioprinter and work on other projects of your interest. We accept students from all years and all majors who are interested in the topic at hand. Since bioprinting is an extremely interdisciplinary field, we are looking for students with all technical backgrounds. Experience in biology or engineering is not required-- just a strong interest in learning about bioprinting technology and in solving unique engineering problems! We strongly encourage anyone who is interested to apply, as a diverse set of skills and viewpoints are very useful to the project.
Two excused absences (or one unexcused) are allowed throughout the semester. Students who miss more will not pass. Three unexcused late attendances are equivalent to one unexcused absence. There will not be a final examination, but there will be several research-based homework assignments to help you apply what you’ve learned, as well as a group project of your choosing that will allow you to explore your interests within bioprinting. You will also collaborate with your peers to write a final report in the style of a scientific paper. A passing grade (P) is awarded to students who complete all course material.
