The Leadership and Justice: The Knowledge for Human Rights! Decal is a community-organizing and human rights course in which students learn the rhetoric and current debates about many social justice issues: human trafficking, immigration, income inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, international human rights, education policy, factory food farming, Islamophobia, and much more. Our DeCal facilitators employ a student-focused pedagogy and incorporate multiple modes of instruction like lectures, videos, role-playing, singing and drawing in order to maximize learning. In class, students will be able to participate in group activities including grassroots community activism, publications, music videos, and event organizing. More importantly, students will have the opportunity to learn about popular community organizing strategies so they can take meaningful action in their communities to address social justice and human rights issues. Past students have created awesome and impactful projects including Humanitarian Mapping, Operation Christmas Child, Project Unity, and Faces of Berkeley, among several. This course has been taught and refined many times and has received average ratings of 7/7 from previous students! Many students have found the information in this course helpful for other classes, various academic disciplines, and life. The facilitators enjoy teaching this course because education is a vehicle for empowerment and social change!

The requirements:
1) All students will be required to attend a class semester event. This event will be on campus. We will find ways to accommodate everyone's schedules.
2) You’re allowed to have two absences. Facilitators need to be notified (via email) at least 24 hours before the absence.
3) In-class journaling. It can be notes, ideas you have, questions, your evaluation of presentations, etc.
4) You will design your own final project based on an issue you are passionate about. It can be an artistic piece, a speech at an event, a plan for a community service project, a music video or anything creative. We approve many project proposals. You will receive support of the organization with materials and connections. If you are interested, we have an amazing list of past final projects that students have completed.
5) Join a department to help you complete your final project: Events-Organizing, Grassroots Organizing, Publications, Music and Video Production.

You must have been previously enrolled or apply for Fall 2017 enrollment in this DeCal in order to join our board.

In order to enroll in the DeCal, you must fill out the following Google Form. In order to access it, you must be signed in to your bMail. After we receive your response, we will send you the appropriate CCN. Then you can use the CCN to enroll in the DeCal on CalCentral. In the Google Form, please indicate every DeCal section that you can attend. This is important since we usually have a long wait list. We will be using a computer-generated system to assign students to sections. NOTE: Even if you have enrolled in the class on CalCentral, you must attend the first two class meetings of your section, or you may be dropped.
