Generation Citizen (GC) is a national nonprofit and nonpartisan organization working to ensure that every student in the United States receives an effective action civics education, which provides them with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in our democracy as active citizens. We envision a country of young people working as active and effective citizens to collectively rebuild our American democracy.
We partner Berkeley students, trained as “Democracy Coaches,” with local middle and high school classrooms to teach a hands-on action civics course in which teens solve pressing issues they are facing in their communities. Past projects have addressed topics ranging from funding for LGBTQ youth homeless services in Berkeley, to police brutality in Oakland, to advocating for affordable housing in the Bay Area.
The Generation Citizen DeCal is one form of participation in Generation Citizen at Cal. Students commit to attending and participating in the weekly 1-hour DeCal, as well as leading classroom sessions at an assigned middle or high school in Berkeley or Oakland twice per week. The DeCal provides ongoing support and training in addition to the opportunity to ask questions, plan lessons, and share experiences in the classroom. The DeCal also serves as GC at Cal’s chapter meeting. Throughout this course, we will learn about local East Bay political structures, an advocacy framework for solving community issues, classroom management tips and strategies for student motivation and engagement.
