Transportation is one of the world’s most fascinating disciplines. The planning, design, and operation of transportation systems combines the disciplines of civil engineering, city planning, and increasingly data science. The primary purpose of this DeCal is to train for the Cal Transportation Team to compete in MidPac in April 2023. However, this course is also suitable for students who wish to gain a broad exposure to the field of transportation, or who wish to bridge the technical gap between theory taught in other classes and software used by industry.

Through a combination of student-led lectures, guest speakers, and projects, you will:
- Gain an understanding of transportation planning & design paradigms & problems
- Learn how to design and optimize infrastructure through AutoCad and Synchro
Work with transportation data in Python and GIS
- Understand project evaluation, financing, and construction

The course is organized around five main topics: Infrastructure Alternatives Selection, Cost Estimation, Technical Report Writing, Technical Presentation, and the Future of Transportation. These five modules will parallel an entire transportation actual project life-cycle for a competition and expose students to the work of transportation planners and engineers. Additionally, students will be working on the Mid-Pac competition submission throughout the semester.

In order to pass this course, students should satisfy at least 70% of the following requirements:
- Attendance (up to 3 absences): 30%
- Participation: 20%
- Project: 40%
- Reflections: 10%
Up to 20% extra credit can be earned by attendance at ASCE and ITE events during non-DeCal time

We will post the meeting time and location when we have it (and how to get there). If you can get to the classroom at our meeting time you're admitted (ie. no application process, first come first served. We will expand the decal enrollment if needed).
