The overall goal of the course is to bring awareness to the importance of proper oral hygiene and its relation to disease. Specifically, this dental health course will discuss oral hygiene, preventive measures, dental procedures and treatments, oral diseases, new dental technology through interactive activities, the introduction of 5-6 specialties within dentistry, as well as the process of applying to dental school.

This class is not only for Pre-Dental Students! We welcome all students interested in Oral Hygiene.

By the end of this course, students will become familiar with the basics of preventative dentistry, oral conditions, and dental procedures, and ultimately understand how to take care of their own teeth and oral hygiene.

The course will consist of 14 one and a half hour in-person (contingent on COVID-19 status) class periods (lectures, discussions, quizzes, and presentations). Classes will be conducted by course facilitator(s) and will include lectures by guest speakers from the dental field. Each topic will have supplemental reading assignments provided through bCourses. Students are evaluated on their attendance, quizzes (10), reflections (3), a midterm research paper (1), and a final presentation (1).

In order to receive a passing grade, a student must “pass” each of the following three categories:
1. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory and lectures will be synchronous, Wednesday 5-6:30 pm PST. There will be 3 excused absences (must email in advance) for the semester and we will have an excused absence form if more absences are needed.
2. Participation: It is important for our students to be engaged in the learning process. To encourage class participation, we ask that students 1) ask questions and engage in class discussions AND 2) ask questions and engage in class discussions via the bCourses Discussion forum. For any students who need accommodations, please speak with the facilitators.

This course has a limited class size (30 students), students will be admitted to the course first come first serve. There is a waitlist of up to five students. Students interested/admitted to the course are required to attend class on the first day. Course Code: #19530
