This course will look at how anarchist and socialist ideas are expressed in the work of Oscar Wilde and consider their role within the interpretation of his work as critic, author, playwright and poet. We will explore how Wilde’s presentation of these political ideologies bid forth questions about the role of art and literature in society. Furthermore, in this course we will explore ideas such as the role of the artist and critic in society, as well as the role of politics in art and literature. The readings for this course will consist of complete primary texts by Wilde as well as complete secondary critical texts.
Goal and Outcome:
1. To present to the student Oscar Wilde’s political ideas.
2. To seriously question, and put forth ideas about the role of art and literature in society.
3. To reevaluate the Wilde’s work within the critical framework of social thought and political theory.
