Since the dawn of cinema, there have been thousands, perhaps even hundreds of thousands, of exceptional films. Films that are just so darn beautiful and thought provoking that they can make even the grouchiest of people crack a smile or shed a tear. There have also been just as many, maybe even more, films that are painfully and unbelievably terrible. Films that are so poorly produced and sloppy that people leave the theater thinking, “someone spent time and money to make that piece of trash?” Certain films, both exceptional and terrible, have accrued massive cult followings -- but why? In this class we will embark on a quest to discover what exactly makes a cult film, well, a cult film. We will watch cult films together and discuss them, analyzing their cultural and historical impact on filmmaking as a whole. In doing so, we will hopefully end the semester with a deeper understanding of the genre. Come by, don’t be shy, and join us on this journey!
