Primarily discussion-based, this course will explore definitions, cases, contexts, and human experiences of genocide through history. Theory related to causes, prevention and intervention of genocide will be reviewed and will guide students in their understanding and discussions on course topics.
There is one required text for this course: "A Problem From Hell" by Samantha Power. This book will be read, in its entirety over the semester. It is the view of the facilitators, as well as the faculty sponsor, that viewing documentaries and observing the human cost of genocide is important to understanding it. Documentaries containing graphic content will frequently be viewed in class.
This class is discussion-based. Attendance and participation will make up the majority of one's overall grade, with one short group presentation and one paper required.
