This DeCal course will primarily focus on preparing students to take the Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer exam to become certified in the basics of LabVIEW. At the end of the course, all the students will take the exam (mandatory) and have the opportunity to be LabVIEW certified. Normally this exam costs $295, but National Instruments is offering the exam free for anyone in this course (pretty sweet deal). In preparation for the exam, we will start at the very basics of LabVIEW programming and cover everything that will potentially be on the exam. The course will cover basics of both LabVIEW software design/development and hardware interaction using LabVIEW.
You need a laptop on which to install LabVIEW. LabVIEW is provided by Berkeley at no cost to the students; please see https://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~inst/ni/. Windows is preferred, but if you have a Mac, Boot Camp can be run to provide you with the Windows OS. LabVIEW can be installed on a Mac, but it does not have nearly the same amount of support as the Windows version. If you want to take the course but don’t have a laptop, talk to us and we can try to work things out.
Students will need to obtain an Arduino/TI Launchpad and a small selection of LEDs/buttons/a small breadboard. These are inexpensive components, and may be repurposed from other classes (EE40/16A/16B/etc). We will provide links and guidelines for purchasing these items later in class.
Grading (P/NP)
If you pass the CLAD exam you will receive a pass. A passing grade on the CLAD is 70% or above. This is set by National Instruments, the instructors have no control over it. However, if you do not pass the exam the grading will be broken down as follows:
Attendance (30%) - Two absences allowed (no reason needed), everybody signs in when they
arrive to class. After that all points will be lost unless good justification for
the absence is provided
Assignments (40%) - Graded based on correctness or just completion depending on the
assignment
CLAD Exam (30%) - Your score on the CLAD
