You’ve all heard the stories, the myths, and the statistics. From the billionth administrator who reminded you that we go to the "#1 public university in the world", to that one time you awkwardly did the Time Warp at CalSO, to the other time someone told you the body of Benjamin Ide Wheeler is being kept in cryogenic stasis underneath the Golden Bear Cafe, Cal spirit has pretty much been everywhere. You’ve rolled down 4.0 Hill, taken a nap on Memorial Glade, and taken even longer naps in the Stacks during finals week. Since the minute you've first stepped foot on this campus, you’ve been made not to forget how prolific, prestigious, and wonderful Cal truly is. Have you ever just sat down and asked yourself... geez, why do we do this?
Look no further! The Cal History, Spirit, and Traditions DeCal has the answers! Do we care if you've been to every single football game or hate everyone who runs this school? NO! Through this course, you will learn the actions and traditions that have affected UC Berkeley from the very moment this school was founded. You will hear from speakers who have shaped the way this campus operates. There will be discussions, debates, and many chances for you to speak your mind.
The course itself is very straightforward, and is designed to be doable yet thought-provoking. There will be three projects, a midterm, and a final paper, all of them brief in length! Through these assignments, you will be able to express your thoughts and really tell the course staff what opinions you have about this university. Bear in mind, the projects will not necessarily be papers... you will have some choice. The attendance policy is about what you would expect: you get 2 unexcused absences. Any exceptions can be figured out through email. Please read the Course Description file for more info!
