The goal of this course is to empower UC Berkeley students to become mentors, teach them how to manage a classroom of diverse women, and how to be effective leaders! They will train to be one-on-one mentors to middle school girls during Fall 2016 and guide their mentee in completing a personal community project with out partner school during Spring 2017. They will also practice teaching a class, and will understand the cultural and gender-based differences that exist across the public education system.
Enrollment in the Spring 2017 DeCal is contingent upon having completed the DeCal in the Fall (Fall 2016), as the mentorship program is a year-long process.
Students will meet for class every other week, and will complete assigned readings and reflections. There will be a final paper due at the beginning of RRR Week.
Attendance at weekly mentoring sessions is mandatory.
